CAM SHOWS GAZ BOYS THE WAY...

- By Barnaby Kellaway

GARETH Ainsworth’s Wycombe will be doing extra shooting practice next week as the Chairboys boss looks to unearth a goalscorer capable of keeping their playoff hopes alive.

Despite sitting in tenth place, the Chairboys are one of the lowest scorers in the division – only the bottom five sides have found the net on fewer occasions this season.

They drew another blank at home to Luton Town as Cameron McGeehan’s first-half stunner extended the Hatters’ unbeaten run at Adams Park to 11 games. And although determined not to be seen as moaning given the club’s financial limits, Ainsworth knows they need to unearth someone from within quick.

“I thought we were outstanding in the first 35 minutes but somebody has got to step up and say ‘I’m going to start scoring goals for Wycombe Wanderers’,” he said.

“That’s what we’re missing, it’s the only thing we’re missing. I know they cost the most money but we’ve got one in the ranks somewhere, we just have to find him.

“It’s my job to settle the troops and work on when teams park the bus against us because that’s what Luton did.

“With no money it’s really tough to get players in. I haven’t got a penny to spare so we have to get players out before we get players in. It’s tough.

“I’m not moaning, I knew the budget at the start of the season and it hasn’t changed, I haven’t changed.”

After being much the stronger side in the first half, the Chairboys were dealt a blow five minutes before the break when McGeehan notched his tenth of the season with a halfvolley from 25 yards.

The hosts did have the ball in the net after the break but Paris Cowan-Hall’s header was disallowed for a push on the keeper.

And the Hatters then finished stronger with Chairboys debut goalkeeper Ryan Allsop performing well in goal while striker Paul Benson also hit the post late on.

“Ryan’s reaction saves to a couple of chances kept us in the game in the second half and I’m really pleased with him,” Ainsworth added, having signed the goalkeeper on loan from Bournemouth this week.

Luton boss Nathan Jones said: “Overall I’m really delighted with the win but I think we rode our luck early on.

“That goal was fitting to win any game – it was a superb strike. He tried one just after which he needed shooting for!

“In the first half we could have been two down. In the second half we could have scored two or three.

“That’s a team I can be proud of and what great fans we’ve got – they turned out again in force. They’re going to need to be patient because we are trying to build stuff. “It’s a great club, that’s why I want to be here because I love fans who are pas

sionate.”
