ADAMS IN A RAGE AT DEFENDING

- By Tom Bassam

DEREK Adams admitted his Plymouth Argyle side’s draw at Crawley Town felt like a defeat, as the Pilgrims fell ten points behind League Two leaders Northampton Town.

Argyle dominated the game and took the lead ten minutes after the break when Ryan Brunt nodded in the outstanding Gregg Wylde’s cross.

However Adams was left less than pleased after sloppy Plymouth defending allowed Shamir Fenelon to turn home from close range with less than ten minutes left on the clock.

“We deserved to come away with three points,” said Adams.

“It feels like a loss with a 1-1. We totally dominated from start to finish and they didn’t trouble us at all.

“We haven’t looked under any threat throughout the 90 minutes.

“We shouldn’t have conceded the way we did at the end.

“It’s just bad defending. We’ve lost our marker and they’ve scored. That’s a huge disappointment, but we haven’t taken our chances when they’ve come along as well.

“Overall we’ve had enough possession and we’ve had enough opportunities to win the game. “We’ve thrown away two points.” Crawley boss Mark Yates saw the game slightly differently. He thought his side were worth their point and was pleased with the character shown by his team to come back from a goal down.

“When you go a goal down against a team that have won nine out of their last ten away games you fear the worst, but we stuck at it,” said Yates.

“We showed resolve and we got a deserved equaliser.

“There was little in the game. They had a few long-range shots in the first half, with neither keeper tested from within the box.

“Paul Jones felt there was a handball in the build-up to their goal. But it was nice to get an equaliser. We don’t draw many, but that’s a really good point.

“It shows the players believe in themselves and they’ve got a good spirit.”

New signings Andy Bond and Tom Dallison were handed their debuts for Crawley, but spent the majority of the first half on the back foot.

Argyle’s Wylde tested Paul Jones’ palms from distance more than once, with Carl McHugh also calling the stopper into action. Wylde’s best opening saw Dallison forced into making a key block from the Argyle dangerman, after Bobson Bawling missed a long ball forward.

After the break, Wylde turned creator when Argyle finally took the lead in the 55th minute. The winger’s pinpoint cross found Brunt in enough space to head past Jones.

After the goal Plymouth took their foot of the gas but Crawley’s only route back into the game seemed to be via a set-piece, and so it proved. Deacon’s free-kick from wide on the right was turned goalward by Josh Yorwerth, with Fenelon squeezing the ball under Luke McCormick.
