Doughty goal has Swindon dreaming

- By Mark Williams

MICHAEL Doughty’s late winner has got Swindon dreaming of an equally tardy push for the playoffs.

The thought would have been ludicrous a month ago, but the rampant Robins’ fine second-half comeback means they have now won three on the bounce and are unbeaten in four.

And boss Luke Williams insists his players can reach their goal.

“The maths suggests it is possible and I know the players are talking about it,” he said.

“It is good to have something to look up to and as long as we keep getting results we will have a chance.

“I am very happy with this win – it always feels good to come from behind. Overall we played well and deserved the three points.

“We scored two really good goals. Michael’s goal was very well taken and it is encouraging to see our midfielders getting into those positions and finishing well.”

A dull opening spell came alive when, on 12 minutes, Peterborough winger Marcus Maddison was tripped by Doughty inside the box.

The former stepped up and duly fired the spotkick low and hard into the bottom corner.

The hosts, boosted by their goal, continued to push and after Maddison broke clear, Swindon’s Jamie Sendles-White did superbly to slide the winger’s low cross out for a corner – with Souley- mane Coulibaly destined to convert at the far stick.

Swindon pulled themselves level soon after the break courtesy of a wonderful free-kick by ex Posh man Nicky Ajose – curling superbly into the top corner from the edge of the box.

Suddenly the pace of Ajose and Jonathan Obika was causing the Posh defence a host of problems.

A string of changes lifted Posh and Gabriel Zakuani saw a closerange header stopped on the line before substitute Tom Nichols agonisingly struck the post from five yards.

And less than a minute after Zakuani had a header ruled out for an infringement, Town raced down the other end and hit the winner.

A tidy move culminated in Doughty firing beyond Stuart Moore from just inside the box.

Posh manager Graham Westley said:“That is now four defeats in a row and we are losing because we are making too many errors.

“We are making errors because we have a youthful side and have new players too, we are just going through one of those spells.

“Too many of our players are getting bypassed and we cannot afford that. Overall, we had plenty of possession, territory and chances. But we can’t say we have the points and that is disappointing.”
