WHITNEY BUOYED BY SIDE’S DESIRE

- By Ben Baker

THE League One automatic promotion race looks like going to the wire, but Walsall interim manager Jon Whitney believes his side’s desire can see them over the line.

Heading into yesterday’s clash against Colchester, Walsall were third following back-toback away victories under Whitney, with just goal difference keeping them behind Wigan.

Whitney wants his troops to keep up their high standards as the Saddlers look to avoid the lottery of the play-offs. “There is a real desire among the players – you can see it building, ”Whitney said.

“Even on the way up to Fleetwood (Walsall won 1-0 in midweek), the players were laughing and there is a real spirit among them.

“They can have success, play with freedom and express themselves, but they have to make sacrifices physically.

“Tactically and technically you can be great but you have to put in that hard work.We did that against Fleetwood and that result upset our rivals.”
