Summer signings pay off for Way

- By Chris Spittles

YEOVIL Town's newlook strike force made an instant impact as the Glovers enjoyed a winning start to the season at the expense of Notts County.

Town battled against relegation last season as a lack of goals hampered their attempts to climb the table, so boss Darren Way recruited a new front three over the summer – and Tom Eaves, Ryan Hedges and Otis Khan all impressed against the Magpies.

Hedges set up Khan to double Yeovil's lead after Kevin Dawson scored the opener, while Eaves led the line with an imposing performance.

Boss Darren Way said: “We were electric in the first 20 minutes today. The boys were brilliant and thoroughly deserved their advantage.

“We caused Notts County a lot of problems in that opening spell of the game and really played some exciting football.

“Some of our players are a little bit unknown, but they showed today exactly what they are capable of.

“Our front three were excellent and hopefully there are many more goals to come from them.”

With Dawson getting the better of County keeper Adam Collin in an aerial challenge before scoring Yeovil's first, and Khan then scoring from close range after Hedges' shot was saved, Magpies boss John Sheridan felt his players contributed to their own downfall.

He said: “It's disappointing because we lost the game, but the biggest disappointment is the manner of the goals we conceded.

“We had a mad 10 or 15 minutes of just switching off. We didn't react to situations and the goals are very poor.

“Second half I thought we dominated the game, should have had a penalty and created some opportunities, but by then we've got a mountain to climb. “It's only the first game of the season but I felt we were our own worst enemies at times. We looked a decent team but we were made to pay for making the wrong decisions.”

After Eaves and Khan both came close to an opening goal, it was Dawson who put Yeovil ahead when he contested a cross with Collin and then slotted into an empty net.

Six minutes later Khan made it 2-0 from close range after Collin could only push Hedges’ shot into his path.

Khan and Dawson then threatened to add a third before the break as Town dominated.

County did improve after the interval, but only forced one save from home keeper Artur Krysiak who reacted well to keep out a shot from Jonathan Forte.
