MIDWEEK WIN HAS MONK IN BUBBLY MOOD

- By Andrew Lawton

MANAGER Garry Monk insists the Leeds United players are fully behind him and his methods despite a mixed start to the new season for the former Swansea City supremo and his team.

United are no strangers to changes of leadership, with owner Massimo Cellino sacking six different managers in just three years at the club.

Monk, 37, has signed a one-year rolling contract but is confident the 2-1 win over Blackburn Rovers in midweek is a sign that their form is improving.

He said: “You could see clearly from the players on Tuesday in their performance and their reaction afterwards how committed everyone is to what we’re doing here, how supportive they are of the way I go about my job and the plan I have in place.

“They understand the level of detail we’re giving to the players and everyone’s very focused on what we’re doing.

“We’ve shown progression from where we were at the start of the season to where we are now.

“It’s small steps and we keep working hard, but everyone believes in each other.”

Monk, sacked by Swansea in December, is confident the work he is putting in is what’s required but added that he’ll need time.

“From within, the owner and everyone, they’ve been supportive,” Monk said.

“They’ve seen how we work. They enjoy how we work and they enjoy the high level of detail and quality we give to the group.

“You could see from the reaction on Tuesday how committed they are. That’s the only thing I focus on.

“It’s the only indicator for me – whether what I’m delivering is good enough – and I think it clearly is.

“Yes, there are ups and downs but that’s the nature of football. I keep saying it takes time but that’s the truth.”
