WILLO’S GOT NEW ADMIRER IN STRIKE PARTNER
STRIKER John Marquis believes Doncaster Rovers team-mate Andy Williams is the best forward in League Two and says he has had a dream start alongside the 30-year-old.
Williams scored 16 goals for Rovers as they were relegated last season and 24-year-old Marquis, who joined Darren Ferguson’s side from Millwall at the beginning of the season, says he didn’t expect the experienced forward to stick around.
But, after nine goals between them in their first ten games, the pair have dove-tailed perfectly and Marquis’ pleasant surprise has turned into real admiration for his hardworking strike partner.
“For someone who has had such a good career, he’s always working hard,” said Marquis. “Off the pitch, he’s trying to help other players improve, like myself.”
“For me, Willo is probably one of the best strikers in the division. His goalscoring record throughout his career has proven that. In front of goal, he’s lethal.
“I think the way he plays is a bit similar to myself in terms of his work rate and how he hassles defenders.
“It helps both of us, knowing our partner is going to be working his socks off for the other.
“We don’t mind who scores as long as we’re plugging away, getting goals as a team and working hard for each other.
“I think the whole team can work off that because, when you’ve got a front two who set the tempo like we do, it really gets the players and the crowd going.”
