Just focus on job you’re paid for...
WOW, that was some week, wasn’t it? Even by football’s turbulent standards, the past week has been quite incredible.
Who would have thought a week ago that Sam Allardyce’s reign as England manager was about to come to an end – apart from perhaps some undercover reporters at the Daily Telegraph?
Allardyce admitted in the aftermath of his departure that he had been ‘a fool’ to get involved in discussions with the reporters posing as businessmen about getting around rules on third-party ownership in football.
The 61-year-old was also alleged to have used his role to negotiate a deal worth £400,000 to represent the fictitious company to Far East investors and be a keynote speaker at events.
For someone who was doing his dream job and earning £3m a year, this was simply daft.
Sadly, the EFL has been drawn into the tawdry affair. Barnsley assistant manager Tommy Wright has lost his job with the Tykes (see story right), while QPR boss Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is in the mire, too.
The former Chelsea striker was allegedly offered a fee of £55,000 to fly to Singapore to speak to investors in a Far Eastern firm that was seeking to be involved in the transfer of players.
Hasselbaink has denied any wrong-doing, but, again, he should never have put himself in a situation where he could be accused of a potential conflict of interest.
Management is a full-time job and surely managers should be focusing 100 per cent of their energies on their team and doing the job they are paid for.
Fortunately for Hasselbaink, QPR are showing every sign of wanting to stick by him and his players responded in yesterday’s 2-1 win at Fulham.
But the only speeches he should be concentrating on making in the coming weeks and months are to his players before matches and at half-time.
