Gareth’s Chairboys hitting the high notes

- By Derek Quinn

TWO second-half goals gave Wycombe three points in a scrappy encounter with Morecambe and boss Gareth Ainsworth insists his side have finally turned the corner.

Headers from Aaron Pierre and Luke O'Nien gave the home side the points as Morecambe suffered a rare defeat on their travels.

It was a victory that delighted Ainsworth, whose side climbed to 16th with their first league win since the start of September.

“We fully deserved the win and I’m delighted because we are showing some consistency and climbing up the table now,” he said.

“They started the game well and created a good early chance but after that our keeper didn’t have to make a save.

“Our shape was good and we looked solid and we have real competition for places now.

“This won’t make our season but it is nice to know we are getting some consistency and after the bad start we had we have moved up the table well and I am happy with the way things are going.

“It was great to keep a clean sheet because they are important and the only thing I could complain about was that we should have got a couple more.”

Morecambe manager Jim Bentley said: “I’m really frustrated because we deserved something from the game.

“We had the better chances and it was all going to plan until they scored which changed the game.

“We looked to get back in the game but were were hurt by some decisions that went against us with a clear penalty not given which makes it so frustrating and a big foul on Kevin Ellison that wasn't given.

“We had a lot of critical decisions go against us last year and we have had the same this year and it is hurting us so much.

“We had one against Coventry on Sunday and we have had two today and these decisions are killing us.

“We have to look at ourselves for the first goal because we didn't clear our lines but I have to give the lads every credit for the way they have competed over the past couple of weeks.”

Pierre broke the deadlock after a poor first half with a far-post header. Morecambe hit back and were denied a penalty when Matt Bloomfield handled but the referee gave a freekick that Michael Rose struck against the post.

The Shrimps' hopes of a comeback were dashed when O'Nien nipped in front of his marker to head Paul Hayes’ cross home.
