TRIBUTES TO VALE MAN MATT

EX-PORT Vale hit­man Tony Nay­lor led the tributes af­ter former Valiants skip­per Matt Car­ragher died on Fri­day, aged 40.

A trib­ute was held at Vale Park ahead of Fri­day’s clash with Ch­ester­field for the man who led them to LDV Vans Tro­phy glory at the Mil­len­nium Sta­dium in 2001.

Hav­ing moved to Port Vale from Wi­gan in 1997, the de­fender made 220 ap­pear­ances in a sev­enyear stint.

Nay­lor, who was also in the side that beat Brent­ford in the 2001 fi­nal, said: “Matty was a cheeky chap­pie, a typ­i­cal Scouse lad, con­fi­dent and a nice guy with it.”
