Tears for Morias as he grabs first goal

- By Barrie White

LEE Glover believes Peterborough United’s performance in their almost-perfect away win at Port Vale should set the template for their League One play-off push.

Goals from Marcus Maddison and a stoppage-time Junior Morias double gave United a much-needed win and lifted them to within two points of sixth place.

Assistant boss Glover was delighted with their defensive performance.

And he had special words for scorers Maddison and an emotional Morais, who was left in tears when he scored his first-ever league goal.

“It was good to get back to playing a bit of the way we like to play, creating chances in a good away performance,” said Glover.

“They had a good spell for about a quarter-of-an-hour or so. The back four and Anthony Grant were great.

“Marcus has been doing really well in training, and we thought if there was a chance, we’d want it to fall to him.

“Scunthorpe and Sheffield United are conceding on average one goal a game, and that’s the benchmark. You need to keep a clean sheet because if you do, you’ll end up at the right end of the table.

“Junior’s a good finisher and I thought he did really well when he came on.”

Debutant keeper Leonardo Fasan – on loan from Celtic – saved Maddison’s 19th-minute penalty after Callum Guy fouled Tom Nichols.

But a minute later, Maddison’s curling effort from around 20 yards flew past Fasan and put the visitors ahead.

Substitute Morias sealed all three points in stoppage time, steering his effort past Fasan.

And then sent the Vale fans home despondent when he linked well with Maddison to score again in the dying moments of the game.

Michael Brown, caretaker manager, admitted his side are in a relegation fight and lacked a cutting edge. He said: “It was disappointing – we didn’t do enough in the first half.

“We addressed those issues at half-time, but again, we had a penalty given against us that wasn’t a penalty.

“We had a lot at their goal for about 20 minutes. We didn’t work their goalkeeper as much as we should have though. They’ve got to be ruthless.

“The message to the fans is that we are in a fight – we knew that when I took this on. We’re trying to build a team and create a spirit that will lead us away from it.
