Massey’s late show ends O’s losing run

- By Chris Spittles

LEYTON Orient manager Danny Webb believes Gavin Massey’s late equaliser can act as a psychological boost for his players after they earned a valuable point towards Football League survival.

Orient had lost six games in a row before arriving in Somerset and looked set for another defeat when Francois Zoko fired Yeovil ahead at the end of the first half.

But the visitors showed great spirit to keep going and were rewarded when Massey pounced on a defensive mistake to deservedly blast his side level with just two minutes left.

It also earned a first point for new boss Danny Webb in his third game in charge of the O’s - but the draw does leave them three points adrift of safety at the bottom of League Two.

Webb said: “Hopefully that point is the first of many for me. We showed great spirit again and it was good to end that losing run.

“It would have been better to have the three points which I think we could have got, particularly in the first half when we looked the likely winners before they scored.

“But with the circumstances we were in with only two or three minutes to go it is a credit to the players that they stuck at it and got the equaliser.

“Hopefully it’s an important point for us. Psychologically it’s nice for the boys to come in on Monday and not to have that ‘lost again’ feeling hanging over them.”

Yeovil went ahead in first half stoppage time, with Zoko scoring from the rebound after Orient keeper Sam Sargeant saved from Tom Eaves.

But the O’s drew level with two minutes remaining.

The Glovers failed to clear a cross from Josh Koroma and Massey lashed the ball in.

Yeovil look to be marooned in mid-table, with manager Darren Way left to reflect on a possible three points that again escaped his grasp.

He said: “When you concede an equaliser in the 88th minute you’re always a little bit disappointed and that’s how we feel after that.

“I knew it would be a tough game with Orient fighting to stay up. They had nothing to lose and threw everything at us at the end of the game.

“With the chances that we had I feel that we should have won the game but we weren’t able to find that crucial second goal.

“It’s disappointing to let a goal in so late but we’ve got another game on Tuesday and we look at that as another chance to climb up the table.”
