DAY’S SO SURE LEE CAN SAVE SHAKERS

- By Charlie Bennett

BURY chairman Stewart Day has followed Lee Clark’s career for many years and says he had no hesitation identifying him as the man to keep the Shakers in League One.

Clark’s reputation was damaged when he won just three of 33 games in charge of Blackpool as they fell out of the Championship in 2014-15, following a two-year spell at Birmingham City.

But the ex-Newcastle and Fulham midfielder, 44, somewhat restored his reputation at Scottish Premiership side Kilmarnock, where he kept them up via the play-offs last season and steered them to sixth this year.

“Lee is someone I have followed through his playing and managerial career and he has played at the very highest level,” explained Day.

“Lee managed Huddersfield to a record 49 games unbeaten and I firmly believe he is the right man, who has an enthusiasm and passionate desire to take this club forward.

“I was overwhelmed with his knowledge of the club, the contacts he has in the game and how he believes in what we can achieve.”

Clark is relishing his new challenge back in English football and is confident he can retain the Shakers’ League One status.

“I’ve been in a relegation battle at Birmingham which we got through, and the same at Kilmarnock,” he added.

“There’ll be no knee-jerk reactions. We will deal with this in a cool, calm and calculated way, to understand the situation, survive and build for the future.

“I know this league from my time with Huddersfield, where I had a lot of success.”
