KARL’S SICK OF MISSED CHANCES

- By John McDougall

CHARLTON boss Karl Robinson believes his side had only themselves to blame after dropping points once more in a pulsating draw with Rochdale.

Niall Canavan’s opener was cancelled out by Jordan Botaka, while Jorge Teixeira gave Charlton the advantage after the break before Calvin Andrews’ leveller.

Dale substitute Nathaniel MendezLaing handed Dale the lead again, but Teixeira grabbed his second just before full-time as the Addicks recorded their third draw in four games.

“The chances we missed in the first half were criminal,” said Robinson. “Once we scored the second, we should have gone three and four.

“And then all of a sudden we find ourselves 3-2 down with two or three minutes to go. It’s nice to turn it around but it’s still only a point.

“Now you look at it, we’ve obviously not won in four, but you’ve drawn three of them and they could have all easily been wins. Through our own fault we’re dropping points, so there’s certain positives to take but there’s certain negatives that we have to rectify.” Dale went ahead after four minutes when Charlton stopper Declan Rudd had a moment to forget, failing to claim Donal McDermott’s free-kick and allowing Canavan to tap home.

But Rudd kept the deficit at one on 25 minutes with a sublime diving save to keep out Andrews’ header.

The Addicks equalised five minutes from the break when Botaka broke free and though his effort rattled the post, he made no mistake with the rebound.

Charlton substitute Stephy Mavididi ran past several Dale players in a 66thminute run, only to be denied by Ben Wilson.

But from the resulting corner Patrick Bauer nodded down for defensive partner Teixeira to give Charlton the lead.

Dale drew level three minutes later when Ian Henderson’s dangerous cross was headed past Rudd by Andrew, who later rattled the crossbar with a 77thminute effort.

Mendez-Laing curled an 84th-minute shot past a diving Rudd to hand Dale a potential winner.

But Charlton rescued a point when Bauer nodded down once more for Teixeira to prod home two minutes from the end, leaving Rochdale boss Keith Hill lamenting individual errors.

“We've got to understand why we are not winning games and it's because of mistakes,” he said.

“We are all responsible as players and staff, but the mistakes today were down to individuals and that is annoying because the players know what they need to do.

“A lot of these players have been with me a long time and know what I expect.

“It was an entertaining game. We've scored three but conceded three and I can see that the opposition had chances to score more, as did we.”
