BARTLETT MERITS CHANCE – JONES

- By Sam Hawthorn

HARTLEPOOL boss Dave Jones says it would not have been right to stand in the way of goalkeeper Adam Bartlett starting a new career.

The 31-year-old asked to be released from his contract to take up a coaching role at Middlesbrough’s academy and has joined Darlington as a player.

“Adam wants to retire from professional football and it doesn’t surprise me as he’s at the age when he has to think of his future,” said Jones.

“He could be scratching around for a job later and this could be a job for life if he goes about it the right way. If he wants to play lower league football as well, then it is fine by me.

“I could have been selfish and left it to the end of the season, but I don’t think that’s right.

“I’ve had it with players in the past who are coming to the end of their careers.

“I couldn’t take that opportunity away from Barts when he could have a long future at a Premier League academy.’’
