WE HAD TO PAY BACKFANS – KOREY

- By Luke Baker

BRISTOL City’s Korey Smith knows the club’s supporters will be crucial in their battle against the drop. That’s why he was happy to help refund their tickets in midweek.

City were soundly beaten 5-0 by Preston at Deepdale, their heaviest defeat for five and a half years.

Midfielder Smith tipped his cap to the supporters who made a 400-mile round trip and believes it was only right the players put their hands in their pockets after a dismal display.

“Even after such a poor performance, the fans were amazing on Tuesday and it’s absolutely crucial we have that support,” said Smith, 26.

“They still clapped us off the pitch and I think they know we have to stick together now. They’re going to be absolutely massive for us in these remaining games.

“We know it was a poor performance and we feel they deserve their wellearned money back.

“We had 312 fans who went all that way on a Tuesday night. They had work the next morning and we didn’t send them home in a good mood.

“We’re not happy about that, so the players are going to refund the price of their tickets.”
