FOUR GO AS DUST SETTLES ON IRON DEFEAT

- By Richard Dore

SCUNTHORPE have released four players following their play-off semi-final defeat by Millwall.

David Mirfin, Scott Wiseman, Joe Anyon and Jamie Ness have been let go and will be free to find new clubs once their contracts are up.

Manager Graham Alexander said: “They were really tough decisions that we had to make on these four players, but I’m sure they’ll go to other clubs and do great jobs for them.”

New terms have been offered to Stephen Dawson, Neal Bishop and Kyle Wootton, while options have been taken on the contracts of Noel Burdett, Jack Dyche and Levi Sutton.

And negotiations are continuing between the club, Luke Daniels and Craig Davies.

The shake-up comes after the Iron were beaten 3-2 by Millwall in the playoffs.

And Alexander knows he must try to improve the squad that came third in League One.

He added: “It will be difficult when you finish third and score as many goals as we have this season, but we have got to find a way

“We have got a lot of young players here who have had a full season and will be better for it.

Defender Murray Wallace said: “We had a lot of confidence coming into the second leg, especially after we scored the first goal.

“There was a real belief, so it’s obviously devastating to not go on and win the game.”

The 24-year-old Scot hasn’t missed a minute of first team action this season.

“It’s nice to play every minute of every game, I was hoping to go one more but it wasn’t meant to be,” he said.

“There are going to be a few players in the squad changing, but the core of the group will use this experience to come back stronger.”
