Cole fires again to leave Uwe beaming

- By Ben Reardon

DEVANTE Cole was the toast of Fleetwood Town after his double emphatically downed AFC Wimbledon at Highbury in a performance which delighted his boss Uwe Rosler.

Having notched the winner at Northampton last week, Cole found the net in either half, ensuring the Cod Army made it three wins on the spin in League One, and earned the plaudits from Rosler in the process.

Rosler said: “Devante Cole has had to wait for his chance.

“He came on and used that chance, and in the last two games he has scored three goals.

“He was our match-winner, so well done to him.

“We are pleased with the three points and the clean sheet.

“In the first half we had the wrong side of the wind and put in a decent performance. In the second half, we stopped doing all of our good habits.

“Devante scored the second goal, but we are not happy with the second-half performance, though we are looking at the bigger picture.”

Town were in front with their first effort on goal after 19 minutes, when Cole profited from neat build-up play between Jordy Hiwula and Kyle Dempsey to bend his shot into the bottom right-hand corner from the edge of the penalty area, beyond goalkeeper George Long.

After the break Wimbledon looked to level, but they were undone on 57 minutes, as Cole cut in from the left to thump majestically into the top corner which extended Fleetwood’s advantage.

Neal Ardley’s visitors went close through chances from Lyle Taylor and George Francomb as they searched for a way back into the contest on the Fylde coast.

However Fleetwood saw out a professional performance to claim maximum points.

Following the defeat on their travels, Ardley admitted he was frustrated.

He said: “I thought we limited them to very little, our shape was good for the most part. “The one thing we worked on all week in training, we got it wrong and we got punished for it.

“With their first attempt on goal, they scored, with their second shot on target, they scored – Cole has cut inside and banged one in the top corner.

“We have had probably in the region of six clear-cut chances.

“We had some great set-piece routines, we hit the bar and ultimately if you don’t take your chances and the opposition take theirs, you lose games of football.”
