‘BAD BOY’ KEE STUNS THE STAGS

- By Simon Smedley

IT PROVED to be an eventful day for Accrington striker Billy Kee.

He was reported in the national media in the morning after being charged along with Cardiff City’s Lee Tomlin with inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent following a night out in January in Leicester.

Then Kee ended the afternoon by bagging a dramatic stoppage-time winner against previously unbeaten Mansfield.

After an end-to-end clash at the Wham Stadium, Kee came up trumps when he bundled home Sean McConville’s corner at the far post.

Asked about Kee’s situation in the wake of his thrilling winner, Stanley boss John Coleman said: “Billy’s a young lad and sometimes problems can occur when lads are on a night out.

“Ultimately the court will decide what happens with him next month.”

On his team’s victory overall, Coleman added: “Credit to Mansfield, they pressed the lives out of us. Steve Evans does get his teams playing like that.

“They’ll still be up there at the end of the season.

“The game could have gone either way if I’m honest, but the ball has fell kindly for us at the end and Billy has done what he’s best at.

“We’ll play better and lose, but it’s the three points that count.

“We are scoring goals and that’s pleasing.

“That’s ten in four games in total now, and that’s not a bad strike rate.”

It proved to be an entertaining opening 45 minutes.

Stanley went in front against the run of play in the 11th minute.

On-fire Kayden Jackson provided the inspiration, gliding superbly past the challenge of Krystian Pearce before neatly burying his fourth goal of the season into the far corner.

But the Stags hit back after 25 minutes.

Lee Angol profited as he tapped home after Stanley goalkeeper Aaron Chapman had spilled a clipped cross from Danny Rose.

Angol and CJ Hamilton were both guilty of fluffing decent chances for the Stags in the second period, and they were ultimately punished just as the game ticked into added time.

Kee crashed home from close range, leaving Stags boss Steve Evans frustrated.

He said: “We were poor, and I suppose that’s what you get when you play poorly.

“We didn’t deserve to lose, but two setplays have cost us and when you don’t defend setplays properly, this is what happens. “Accrington have nicked two extra points, but fair play to John’s team, they are well organised and they fight so hard. “We have to learn from days like these, and we will do. “We didn't deserve to win that game in terms of quality, but if it was based on possession we'd have won it.

“It’s been a really disappointing day, but this is a really tough place to come to don’t forget.

“We’ll get back on the training pitch on Monday and we will make sure that we work a few things out.”
