WARNOCK’S IN BOUNCY MOOD

- By John Lyons

CARDIFF, Wolves and Ipswich made it a hat-trick of wins in a dramatic midweek programme – but Nottingham Forest’s 100 per cent start came to an end.

Goals from Sean Morrison and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing helped Neil Warnock get one over his former club Sheffield United. The veteran Cardiff boss said: “To start with three league wins on the bounce is great. It takes the pressure off.”

Wolves continued their flying start with a 3-2 success at Hull City.

Club record £15m signing Ruben Neves netted a magnificent long-range opener, while Diogo Jota and Nouha Dicko were also on target for Wolves.

Skipper Michael Dawson and David Meyler (penalty) replied for Hull, who had striker Abel Hernandez carried off late on with an Achilles injury.

Jordan Spence netted an 88th-minute winner as Ipswich triumphed 4-3 in a thriller against Millwall at The Den. Martyn Waghorn continued his fine start to life with the Tractor Boys with a double, and Joe Garner got the other.

Jed Wallace, Aiden O’Brien and Tom Elliott netted for the Lions, but they came up just short.

Former Accrington Stanley man Matty Pearson and Ryan Hedges popped up with the goals as Barnsley felled

Nottingham Forest to bag their first win. Daryl Murphy scored for Forest, who slipped to fifth place.

Middlesbrough climbed to fourth on the back of a routine 2-0 home win against bottom side Burton Albion. Striker Britt Assombalonga bagged a double, his first goals since his £15m switch from Forest this summer.

Aston Villa’s disappointing start to the season continued as they went down 2-1 at Jaap Stam’s Reading.

A Glenn Whelan own goal and Modou Barrow’s effort in the opening ten minutes of the second half put the Royals in control.

Conor Hourihane pulled one back for Villa with three minutes left, but it was too little, too late.

The defeat left Steve Bruce’s Villans second bottom with just one point from three games.

Cool

Derby County bagged their first victory with a 1-0 win against Preston, Matej Vydra keeping his cool from the penalty spot. Leeds United’s 0-0 draw with Fulham was overshadowed by a serious injury to Fulham striker Lucas Piazon in a challenge with the home side’s Conor Shaughnessy. The Chelsea loanee, 23, suffered a fracture dislocation to his right ankle. Harry Redknapp’s Birmingham played out a goalless draw against Bolton.

The fixtures were completed on Wednesday when

Norwich beat QPR 2-0 and

Sheffield Wednesday drew 1-1 with Sunderland. Nelson Oliveira set the Canaries on their way and Southampton loanee Harrison Reed made the game safe.

Simon Grayson’s Sunderland led early on at Hillsborough through George Honeyman, but Wednesday salvaged a point when David Jones struck from 25 yards on 70 minutes.
