BERRY’S SIGNING SHOWS HATTERS’ INTENT

- By George Roberts

LUTON Town have again shown their desire to win promotion this term by snapping up prolific Cambridge United midfielder Luke Berry.

The 25-year-old has signed a three-year contract, with the option of a further year, for an undisclosed fee.

The Hatters have already brought in Crawley Town striker James Collins, 26, to give them the firepower to do better than last season’s play-off semi-finals.

Luton boss Nathan Jones said: “Luke’s young, he’s ambitious, he’s technically good, he gets goals – and he’s a little bit like Cameron McGeehan in terms of the way he played, so we are delighted to have him.

“He’s another one who adds an attacking option for us from a midfield area, and is someone we’ve admired and liked for a long time.

“He’s a great acquisition and hopefully he’ll prove to be a really successful signing for us.”

Former Barnsley midfielder Berry said: “I feel that Luton can really push on this season and get promoted, get ourselves back in League One and hopefully keep progressing from there.

“It’s a club that’s on the up. It wants to keep on improving – like myself.”

Meanwhile, right-back Jack Stacey knows he is going to have to deliver his best form this season if he’s going to keep his place ahead of rising star James Justin.

The two defenders look set to have a season-long battle to play in the first team after Justin, 19, returned to action recently following an injury lay-off.

Justin will be a rival for 21-year-old Stacey, who has put in some impressive displays since signing from Reading over the summer.

Stacey said: “It shows the depth of the squad – he’s a good player. I want to play my best every game either way and I’m sure he wants to as well.”
