EDINBURGH IS ON THE BRINK
Justin Edinburgh’s days as Northampton boss look numbered after he saw his side fall to a humiliating defeat at the hands of local rivals Peterborough United, making it no win in 13 games for the Cobblers.
Despite his sides’ demoralising defeat Edinburgh remains defiant that he remains the correct choice to manage Northampton, saying: “I’m absolutely the right man for the job.
“I’ve worked hard as a player and a manager, I’m honoured to be manager of this football club. If you think I’m going to give it up lightly, absolutely not.
“I’m hugely disappointed by the result, I’m angry, we’ve been poor in defending the goals we’ve given away, so, so poor.
“We’ve let ourselves and the fans down. I accept all responsibility, there’s no doubt about that, but we’re in this together.
“We have to get ourselves out of this situation, there’s no place to hide, we’ve got to take the challenge and hit it head on.”
The opening 20 minutes saw only one real chance of note, Leonardo De Silva Lopes gifted a wonderful opportunity to put the visitors ahead, although his effort from just six yards out sailed high over the bar.
Peterborough took the lead on 32 minutes after the hosts clumsily lost possession allowing Gwion Edwards to make a wonderful run from his own half before firing a low shot into the bottom corner of Luke Coddington’s net.
Nine minutes later Junior Morias doubled Posh’s lead after doing well to find space and turn in the box, coolly slotting home, leading to a chorus of boos and a mass exodus from sections of the frustrated home support.
Peterborough continued to be the dominant side as the second half progressed, talismanic striker Jack Marriott proving to be a nuisance for the Nothampton defence, and with 15-minutes left Marriot unsurprisingly found the net, comfortably sliding the ball through the legs of Coddington.
The hosts did score late on through Alex Revell, although so did Posh when Marcus Maddison converted from the spot to see table-toppers Peterborough head home with all three points. A jubilant Grant McCann said: “We were very good today, I’m really proud of my team. It was an all-round team performance out there.
“That said, I am disappointed that we lost the clean sheet. It’s something we need to iron out going forward.
“Our fans were tremendous today. To see so many people come here, and for us to send them home happy, that was always our aim.
“It’s been a great start to our season, but nobody is getting carried away and we’ve just got to make sure we keep our foot on the pedal now and carry on as we are.”
