MORE GAFFES FROM O’BRIEN

- By Chris Spittles

COVENTRY slipped further off the pace at the top of League Two as they suffered a second successive defeat and saw goalkeeper Liam O’Brien make an expensive mistake for a second consecutive game.

After being culpable for Newport’s winner seven days earlier, the former Portsmouth keeper collided with Sky Blues defender Chris Stokes to gift a 27thminute opening goal to Yeovil’s Rhys Browne.

The Glovers clinched victory when Southampton loanee Olufela Olomola blasted in his fourth goal of the season in the second half.

And with the Sky Blues failing to breach a defence that had previously conceded 14 goals in three games, boss Mark Robins was critical of referee Martin Coy.

He said: “I’m disappointed but also annoyed at the fact that we’ve had two penalties not given and in the build-up to their second goal there was a handball.

“I feel aggrieved by those decisions and of course we made a mistake for the first goal so it’s made for a scrappy game.

“Outside of those moments we had some good spells of play and should have gone in front very early in the game.

“I’ll try to take the positives from the game as I always do and there were some good passages of play from us, but also some poor decisionmaking from us as well.

“For their first goal I felt Chris Stokes had the situation under control and Liam [O’Brien] didn’t need to come out. He knows that and has to learn from what happened.”

Yeovil made it back-to-back home wins and after his side’s defensive woes in previous games, boss Darren Way was delighted to keep a clean sheet.

Way said: “I’m very pleased. We’ve put in a lot of hard work this week and it was important that we got the balance right between defence and attack.

“With the attacking threat we’ve got I’m always confident that we will score goals and then keeping a clean sheet earned us the win.

“Rhys [Browne] has got great pace and power and we saw that when he put their defence under pressure for the first goal. Olomola has got similar qualities and we caused them problems all game with our forward players.”

After Jodi Jones’s powerful first-minute shot was beaten away by home keeper Artur Krysiak, Yeovil took the lead against the run of play on 27 minutes in farcical fashion as Coventry defender Stokes collided with his goalkeeper O’Brien.

The mix-up left Browne with an open goal and he kept his composure to score.

After the break Krysiak again frustrated Coventry as he superbly kept out a header from Marc McNulty. And Yeovil sealed the points when Olomola ran clear to blast a low shot into the corner from 20 yards.
