BREWERS’ CHEERS AS THEY BAG UNITED TIE

- By John Lyons

THERE are some mouthwatering ties for EFL clubs to look forward to in the Carabao Cup third round – following Thursday’s early morning draw at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Beijing. The 4.15am start time may have left plenty napping, but at least Carabao China CEO James Huang and EFL chief executive Shaun Harvey pulled some tasty matchups out of the bag. Burton Albion’s reward for knocking out Neil Warnock’s Cardiff is a visit to Old Trafford to take on Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United, live on Sky. It revives memories of the FA Cup ties between the sides back in 2006 when the Brewers were a Conference club. United won 5-0 at Old Trafford after a 0-0 draw at Burton. Burton boss Nigel Clough said: “It’s a great draw for the fans but also the players – I don’t think many of them will have had the chance to play at Old Trafford before. It’s very exciting and will give everyone a lift and a boost." Nottingham Forest visit Premier League champions Chelsea, while League One outfit Doncaster Rovers go to the Emirates Stadium to face Arsenal. The winners of the remaining second round tie between Barnsley and Derby (Tues, Sep 19) have the big incentive of a trip to Wembley to take on Tottenham. Bolton go to the London Stadium to face West Ham, while Sunderland travel to Everton. Three other Championship sides will be out to shock Premier League opposition – Bristol City host Stoke, Reading entertain Swansea and Leeds go Burnley. The latter could see former Leeds striker Chris Wood, who joined Burnley in a club record £15m deal last Monday, line up against his old club.
