LEGEND SEEDORF IN LINK WITH LATICS

- By Dan Barnes

FOUR-TIME Champions League winner Clarence Seedorf has emerged as a surprise candidate for the vacancy at Oldham Athletic following John Sheridan’s dismissal.

Sheridan’s departure came on the back of last week’s 5-1 hammering to Rotherham, which typified the Latics’ lacklustre start to the season.

Seedorf ’s name has been firmly thrust into the managerial mix following reported talks at Boundary Park, with Billy Davies, Alan Stubbs and Ryan Giggs also in the running.

The former Dutch international had a four-month stint at Italian heavyweights AC Milan in 2014, followed by an uninspiring performance at Chinese side, Shenzhen.

The 41-year-old has previously raised the question himself as to whether he is simply just another high-profile footballer but is keen to try his hand in England.

Speaking in May, he said: “I think it’s one of the best places to be as a coach, so absolutely I would consider any opportunity in the UK.”

The surprise prospect of Seedorf does have a catch, as it has been suggested it’s only dependant on proposed new investment in the club.

Stubbs has been out of the managerial game for more than 11 months, after a poor run at the start of 2016/17 with Rotherham ending his contract in October.

Former Derby County man Davies is said to be eyeing the hot seat at Oldham in a new challenge for his managerial career.

Giggs on the other hand, who missed out on the Swansea post last year to Paul Clement, could return to his Manchester roots.

Steven Pressley, who resigned from Fleetwood Town in July 2016, has also reportedly been interviewed with others expected for talks next week.

Oldham are expected to announce an appointment in the next couple of weeks and will look to turn around their poor start to the season.
