NATHAN SALUTES CAPTAIN MARVEL SCOTT

- By Andrew Lawton

LUTON boss Nathan Jones has hailed the leadership of Scott Cuthbert with the Hatters captain making his 100th appearance for the club this weekend.

The 30-year-old centreback joined the club two years ago from Leyton Orient and linked up with Jones when the latter arrived at Kenilworth Road in January 2016.

And the partnership has proven a strong one with Cuthbert retaining his place in the starting line-up despite fierce competition for spots in Jones’ squad.

“I must be delighted with him because he is playing in the team. If anyone is in the team then I must be delighted with them because the competition is ferocious at the moment,” said Jones.

“I have been really pleased, we have had real continuity in our team so far and he has proved that. He has been a great captain for me since I have been here.

“There were rumours about him going in the summer and he came up to me and we cleared the air, but I have never stated anything about Scott Cuthbert wanting to leave.”

The Hatters moved to the top of League Two in midweek as they recorded their seventh victory in their last eight games with a 4-1 success at Exeter Town.

And while Jones revealed he believes he has other options to take for the skipper’s role, the performances of Cuthbert, on and off the field, have made his decision for him.

“Scott has been a fantastic captain,” he added. “I have brought in others with captain material in terms of Johnny Mullins, Alan McCormack, Alan Sheehan and James Collins potentially.

“So there’s a lot of people there, but I have kept faith with Scott because he has been a wonderful captain for me on and off the pitch. I have been delighted with him.”
