Super-sub duo end Tangerine dreams
BLACKPOOL were left heartbroken as Boreham Wood knocked out the League One side, leaving boss Gary Bowyer to rue the impact of two supersubs and a slew of missed chances.
The Tangerines went ahead on the 62nd minute as Danny Philliskirk beat his marker and latched onto a well-timed through ball, before slotting past Grant Smith in the Boreham Wood goal.
However, a double substitution from Wood boss Luke Garrard turned the tables on the EFL side, as Blair Turgott and Dan Holman both came on to score.
And a dejected Bowyer said: “It is very hard to take because we were excellent, and I think that throughout the game we controlled it.
“We gave them a little bit of energy with their equaliser, and then from the winner, we have not defended a setplay well.
“But, in terms of how we went about the game, the amount of possession that we had and the chances that we had, then Callum Cooke could have been on a first half hat-trick.
“That has been our undoing a little bit, we haven’t taken our chances.
“At half-time, I was happy with how we were playing and when you watch the game back tonight, you will see the amount of chances that we had, and the way that we went about it.
“Listen, it happens and that’s why the BBC and everyone were here, we had it last season when we played against a Championship team, it is part and parcel of the FA Cup and that is why it is such a great competition.”
Turgott got the hosts’ first; he’d broken into the area as Kane Smith darted down the rightwing and pulled the ball back into the box for him to thrash home.
The Wood went ahead with just three minutes remaining, Bruno Andrade’s corner was headed across the box and Dan Holman snuck in to poke the ball past Ryan Allsop. And Garrard praised his team for their spirited revival: “I feel that the credit has to go to the players.
“We asked a couple of questions from them at half-time, three in particular, and I have got to be honest, they came in and they rammed it down our throats, because the response was superb.
“We’ve not beaten a League side in 70 years of history, so tonight is going to be very fun. I walked into the bar just then and all the fans have got an energy about them, and we can’t wait to go into the draw on Monday.”
