Royals boss rues missed chances against leaders

-

Wolves goal, but he was increasingly called into action during the second half.

The Royals racked up the chances, with Mo Barrow’s shot pushed away by Ruddy, and substitute Sone Aluko’s follow-up turned off the line.

Then Ruddy was on hand to provide another save to deny Aluko, with the subsequent loose ball failing to fall to anyone in blue and white.

It was a game where you always felt there was going to be one more chance, and it fell to Wolves. After excellent work from Helder Costa in midfield, he found Doherty in space who cut inside and turned deftly in the box, before tucking his left-footed shot under Mannone to seal the result for the visitors.

Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo said his side had come up against a good team.

“We know that they are a team that cause a lot of problems. We had to find solutions against them, and that meant we had to defend well, which we did,” he said. “When you see a player throwing his body in front of the ball, then you know you can count on your players.”

Santo said that he knew that Reading would attack in the second half.

“We played well in the firsthalf but after that we knew they would come forward at us,” he said.

“We had to recongnise that, but we still had moments to try and get the second goal.

“It would have been nicer if it came before the 88th minute, but we are happy.”
