Boo-boys haunting boss Farke

- By Blair Ferguson

NORWICH City manager Daniel Farke called for more from his team following a lacklustre draw against Barnsley that prompted boos from the home fans on the final whistle.

Josh Murphy gave Norwich a reason to celebrate with an early deflected opener, but the mood was damped by an errorridden performance.

And Barnsley will feel an extra bit of quality could have seen them extend on Harvey Barnes’ goal just after the break.

Norwich’s poor run of form has them now without a victory in four games, and without a win in their last six home matches.

And Farke is now urging his side to improve in all areas and aspects of their game to force a victory.

“I’m totally annoyed and frustrated today because it was a poor performance and we didn’t deserve to win this game,” Farke explained. “I think a draw is a fair result and for that I can totally understand why the fans were frustrated.

“We didn’t move the ball quick enough and we made a lot of mistakes when passing and so you give possession away.

“The technical players didn’t have the strength to work against the ball, and the only option is to win some of the offensive duals, but we were too soft and lost those too much and that was the reason we weren’t able to make more chances.”

After an uneventful opening ten minutes Norwich found themselves fortuitously in front with their first chance of the half.

Nelson Oliveira picked out Murphy inside the box, and the winger’s first-time shot deflected off Angus MacDonald, wrongfooting Adam Davies who had already gone left as the ball bounced into the right corner.

Despite having a majority of the ball, it took until just shy of the half-hour mark for Barnsley to trouble Angus Gunn.

A strong hand was enough to deny Hammill’s long-range effort, but a quick clearance was needed when he spilt another of the wingers’ shots into the box.

The visitors’ possession finally clicked two minutes into the second half when George Moncur powered through on goal before perfectly finding Barnes in space, with his low shot across goal going under Gunn and into the bottom-right corner.

Maddison’s 66th-minute effort forced Davies to tip over in one of the few shots on goal for either side, as a half-hour of misplaced passes and lack of killer instinct came to an uneventful end.

This latest draw sees Barnsley unbeaten in three games, and while manager Paul Heckingbottom was happy with the point, he still thinks his side should have won.

“I am a bit disappointed not to win the game, but I always say to our players you get what you deserve, and performancewise there were two reasons we didn’t win it,” he said.

“One was the goal we conceded, and we spoke about how they like to take quick freekicks, but a couple of our players thought it was unjust, so instead of doing their role they turn to the ref and the ball is gone. That’s the only thing in the game that’s got me angry.

“Our final ball wasn’t great often enough, and even when we were in shooting positions Angus Gunn has made some saves.”
