ROBBIE’S REMEDY FOR THE EXILES CRITICS
ROBBIE Willmott insists that performing on the pitch will be the perfect rebuttal to Newport fans who have pointed the finger at him this season.
The 27-year-old winger, who joined the Exiles from Non-League Chelmsford in the summer, has come in for stick from supporters on social media at times this term, but he’s striving to silence the boo-boys.
Willmott, in his second spell with the club, is keen to do his talking on the pitch.
He points to a performance such as his starring display in Newport’s draw with Port Vale this month – when he played in central midfield – as evidence of what he is capable of.
“I think I’ve had a bit of bad press over recent weeks from a few fans who have got on my back a little bit, trying to tell me I’m not a centre midfielder,” he said.
“I put in 100 per cent for the club, whatever position I play.
“The gaffer (Michael Flynn) has asked me to play in centre midfield to do a job. I’m doing that to the best of my ability.
“It doesn’t bother me. I never doubt myself. I think everyone goes through a sticky period.
“I had a good start to the season, a bit of a sticky period and now it’s my time to kick on.
“Since bringing me back to the club, the gaffer has played me in a few positions and showed faith in me.
“He asked me to do a job in midfield against Walsall (in early November) and luckily, I kept my place.
“I think I owed the fans a performance and I owed him a performance.
“I don’t mind where I play.
“I’ll always put in a hundred per cent, wherever the gaffer selects me and whenever I’m wearing the shirt.”
