SKUSE IS WAITING TO HEAR IF HE’S WANTED

- By Charlie Bennett

COLE Skuse admits he still has no idea if Ipswich Town want to keep him next season, with contract talks yet to begin.

The 31-year-old’s current deal is up at the end of the season and he is yet to hear whether the club want to re-negotiate.

The Tractor Boys may have other priorities, with Mick McCarthy’s future also uncertain.

Town fans have been increasingly vocal about the style of play at Portman Road and, even though there is no suggestion the club want to replace McCarthy, his relationship with supporters is strained and his contract is also up in June.

Skuse revealed Ipswich’s players do talk about McCarthy’s future, with his own also up in the air.

“There’s nothing to report. It’s not something that is taking my focus away from football,” he said.

“I’d be lying if I said the manager’s situation hasn’t been spoken about.

“The lads are aware of players’ and staff contract situations, but it’s not something that is discussed in very much depth.

“If you start digging too deep, it could have an effect on games and results.

“He (McCarthy) was obviously the one who brought me in.

“He’s shown a lot of faith in me and I’ve played a lot of games under him.

“But I’m not aware of his situation – only he knows that – so who knows what will happen come the end of the season?”

Ipswich are one of the lowest spenders in the league but are still just a few points off the play-offs before the Christmas break.

Midfielder Skuse is confident they will continue to punch above their weight.

“It’s not the first year that we’ve been hearing that X, Y and Z are spending millions,” he said.

“It’s something we don’t even talk about, to be honest. It is what it is and we get on with it.”
