‘HOSTILE’ COUNCIL FORCING A LIONS RETHINK

- By Charlie Bennett

MILLWALL are investigating a move away from Lewisham due to the ‘unhelpful and hostile’ council, a statement from chairman John Berylson has revealed.

An ongoing dispute between the Lions and Lewisham over a compulsory purchase order on land surrounding the Den resurfaced this week.

Lewisham abandoned the plan in January, but Berylson fears they are once again considering selling the land to developers Renewal.

Renewal want to build houses and a sporting village in the New Bermondsey area.

Berylson admitted that moving away from The Den is far from his preferred option, but he is considering every avenue available to him.

“I am being asked with mounting concern whether it is true we are considering a move from Lewisham borough,” read his statement.

“While I should emphasise this is emphatically not our preferred option, I must confirm we are obliged to give this our full consideration and have already taken steps to investigate alternative sites with relevant third parties.

“It will be extremely difficult to see a long-term future in a borough where our local authority is unhelpful and hostile to us, and where a property developer has preferential treatment and seems intent on acting against our best interests.”

On the playing side, Steve Morison has signed a contract extension with the Lions, despite not managing to score a single goal in their first 21 games.

Despite his lack of cutting edge, he feels his new deal is deserved.

“I think I’ve earned it,” he said. “I’ve been key to the games we’ve won this season and the results we have got. I think I’m right in saying we haven’t won a league game unless I have been on the pitch.”
