BYRNE’S HAPPY TO BOMB ON FOR LATICS

- By Andrew Lawton

NATHAN Byrne is loving the additional freedom afforded to him by Wigan manager Paul Cook this season.

The 25-year-old full-back, who spent time last season on loan at Friday’s opponents Charlton, has been an ever-present in the Wigan side this year.

And he’s praised Cook for allowing him to remain fresh and keep up his impressive recent form, which has helped the Latics to the summit of League One.

He said: “The gaffer asked me to play a more attacking role and have less defensive responsibility than a normal full-back.

“It’s perfect for my game and I’m very happy with my contribution to the team so far, something I want to maintain until the end of the season.

“I’m really enjoying this season and, game by game, I’m feeling stronger. The manager is very good with us in that respect, as he gives the starting XI plenty of rest between matches.

“The recovery is very good and, when it’s game after game, you don’t think about your fitness. You just keep running.

“When the whistle blows, you keep going until it goes again after 90 minutes.”

Cook joined Wigan from Portsmouth at the beginning of the season and was given a three-year contract with the newly-relegated club.

The Latics look on track to clinch an immediate return to the Championship this term and Byrne is quick to credit Cook with the change in their recent fortunes.

“Last season was difficult because we were disjointed. Some of the current team, myself included, were out on loan. Some were injured and others weren’t being picked,” he added.

“Those who are still here from last season didn’t play a great deal together but the manager has brought us all back together.”
