COWLEY KEEN TO FINISH JOB AT LINCOLN

- By Charlie Peat

DANNY Cowley has banished rumours of a move away from Sincil Bank and believes his stay is far from over at Lincoln.

Cowley, who helped the Imps win the National League last season, has been linked with the Southend position after manager Phil Brown was placed on gardening leave.

But the 39-year-old was bullish about speculation over his future and is eyeing a second successive promotion with Lincoln this term.

“You don’t want to be disrespectful to other clubs, so I suppose it (being linked with other clubs) is flattering,” said Cowley, whose contract at Sincil Bank runs out in 2021.

“But we’re fully focused on the here and now with Lincoln City. I always want to finish what I start.

“Myself and Nicky (assistant manager and Danny’s brother) work very, very hard with the rest of our management team in trying to build something.

“Once you’ve laid the foundations and start to build something, you want to follow it through to the conclusion – and the conclusion is helping the club to reach its potential.

“While we’ve made a good start in our first 18 months here, we still feel there is a lot of life left in this journey.”

Cowley spent almost eight years at the helm of Non-League Concord Rangers, something which the Lincoln boss suggests proves his long-term commitment to a club.

He added: “During that period, there were lots of times when I could have moved for significantly more money to higher-level clubs.

“But I was in the process of building something. I look back on what we did at Concord, albeit at the lower level, and will be forever proud of where it was when I left, compared to where it was when I took over. I was able to make a difference.”
