Bunn the cure for travel-sick Shakers

- By Claire Gould

BURY caretaker boss Ryan Lowe dedicated his side’s victory to the travelling Shakers fans after two late goals secured his side’s first away league win of the season.

Two goals in the last ten minutes from substitutes George Miller and Harry Bunn cancelled out James Henry’s first-half effort, giving Bury their time first league victory in nine outings.

Lowe said: “I want to dedicate the win to the fans that have travelled. They’ve travelled in their numbers and that’s hard when we haven’t won for a year away from home.

“I think we expected to win to be honest because that’s the mentality I’ve thrown into the lads.

“You go a goal down and you think it’s going to be tougher than ever but you give the lads the licence to go and do what they’re capable of doing.”

Bury started the game brightly and almost opened the scoring in the 14th minute, when former Oxford favourite Chris Maguire’s in-swinging corner seemed to bounce off the head of Peter Clarke and hit the post before being scrambled away by the Oxford defence.

Bury should have been awarded a spotkick in the 26th minute, when Zeli Ismail was felled in the box by Dwight Tiendalli, only to see his penalty appeal waved away by referee Robert Lewis.

Oxford took the lead on the stroke of halftime, Henry tapping in at the far post from Isaac Buckley-Ricketts left-wing cross.

Into the second-half and substitute Miller poked in a close range equaliser in the 81st minute from Oxford defender Phil Edwards’ long throw.

And three minutes later the 191 travelling Shakers fans were sent into raptures as a long ball over the top from Greg Leigh was pounced on by Bunn, who took one touch before firing past Eastwood in the Oxford goal.

And Oxford manager Pep Clotet was understandably disappointed to see his side lose after being ahead for so long.

He said: “With ten minutes remaining and being 1-0l up we had to win that game.

“It was not an open game and we were expecting that, Bury came here looking not to lose the game, which gave us no spaces and made it difficult to find a gap to go forward.

“Our defence had looked good until the long throw and we seemed to lose our organisation after that.

“We can’t legislate for individual errors, but my job is to help the players not make those mistakes.”
