ROVERS SQUAD ‘NOT IN NEED OF FIXING’

- By Charlie Talbot-Smith

BOSS Tony Mowbray admits he is loath to tinker any more with what appears to be a winning formula at Blackburn.

Rovers have brought in Adam Armstrong, Amari’i Bell and Jack Payne this January to boost their promotion bid.

Before the weekend, the former Premier League champions were on a 16match unbeaten league run and well-placed for an immediate return to the Championship.

Mowbray is confident he has the right squad to take care of business till the end of the season.

“I don’t think through necessity it needs to be busy,” Mowbray said of his transfer plans.

“I’m reasonably happy with the group we have.

“We have potentially four players on the way back and I already have some selection issues to deal with when I’m picking teams, squads and substitutes.

“There’s maybe one or two additions that could still happen but, really, to bolster the group, it will be for the future rather than for me to improve what’s on the grass at the moment.”

As well as building a new squad capable of promotion, Mowbray is adamant he has also needed to manufacture a belief at the club following relegation.

“There was an uncertainty at the start of the season of whether this was the right environment for them to play their football,” he said.

“For reasons like having families and being able to earn money in the league.

“But, as we’ve talked many times before, I’ve said that, if you played a part in us finding ourselves in League One and I felt you were good enough, you should stay to help us get out of League One and back into the Championship.

“The strength of character, the team spirit and the camaraderie is so much stronger than it was at the start of the season.”
