KANE: I KNOW WE’RE ABLE TO SURVIVE

- By James Andrew

TODD Kane likes what he’s seen at Oxford since joining on loan late last month.

And, despite an indifferent run of form for the team, the full-back isn’t worried about being sucked into a relegation fight.

Kane scored a debut goal as the U’s staged a remarkable late comeback to beat Charlton 3-2 at the Valley a fortnight ago, but ahead of the weekend that was their only win in the last five league games.

In fact, the other four have all been losses, dropping them into the bottom half of League One.

But the 24-year-old Chelsea loanee is still dreaming of the play-offs, not fearing relegation.

“I just think, with the quality of players here, I don’t think we should have the worry of thinking ‘hold on a minute, we’re going to go down here’. Not at all,” he said.

“When I first came here, I thought to myself ‘we should be pushing higher’. It’s just a little bit of luck sometimes. I’m very confident.

“The performance at Charlton was good, and knowing that we can beat a team like that, we can beat anyone in the league. I don’t think pushing for the play-offs is over yet.”

The U’s are still without a permanent manager and appear no closer to appointing one, following Pep Clotet’s sacking almost a month ago.

Derek Fazackerley is still in caretaker charge, with a laundry list of managers having been linked with the post, only to fall away for one reason or another, including Frank Lampard, Michael Appleton, Paul Ince, David Unsworth and Sol Campbell.

Alan Stubbs is the latest name to be thrown into the ring, with some sources suggesting he has already been interviewed.

The 46-year-old won just once during a 14-game spell in charge of Rotherham in 2016 but previously had more success with Hibs.
