MISTAKE TO PLAY ON WITH THE PAIN – LEES
The team is going through a little bit of a tough patch and we’re playing a different formation. I’m just champing at the bit to get out there.”
After three months of rehabilitation, the defender made a return to action for the development squad on Monday.
The former Leeds man’s last appearance came at Ipswich in November, having signed a long-term deal in the summer that keeps him at the Yorkshire side until 2021.
The ex-England Under-21 international revealed that, such was his desperation to stay on the park, he played through pain and aggravated the injury.
He said: “I had played with the injury for a month or so. I tried to do everything I could to stay on the pitch, but it probably got to the point where it was a little bit stupid of me to carry on playing.
“Maybe if I had swallowed my pride a bit earlier I might have been out for a couple of weeks, rather than months.
“But that’s the way it goes – I’m a bit too stubborn at times.” TOM Lees has found things tough since Jos Luhukay took over at Sheffield Wednesday and is desperate to show exactly what he can do.
A groin problem that needed surgery has kept the 27-year-old sidelined since November.
And Lees has been hugely frustrated at his inability to prove himself to Luhukay, who succeeded Carlos Carvalhal at Hillsborough last month.
He said: “It has been really difficult because, when a new manager comes in, you are desperate to be playing and showing him what you can do.
“I haven’t had that opportunity. I’ve been working pretty much all day every day with the physios.
“They have been great and put in 12-hour days alongside me, to try to get me back as quickly as possible.
