‘LEADER’ GILBEY OUT FOR REST OF SEASON

- By Luke Baker

MK DONS boss Dan Micciche claims the club have lost a leader, as well as a star midfielder, after the news that skipper Alex Gilbey will be out for the remainder of the season.

The 23-year-old had surgery on a knee injury this week and, although the club have not committed to an exact timescale for his return, he will be out for the rest of this campaign and into the next.

Dons head of sports medicine Simon Crampton said: “After the game against Walsall (a 1-0 loss a fortnight ago), he reported the injury to us. We acted upon it and he had an MRI before visiting a surgeon in London.

“Unfortunately for Alex, it was discovered he had picked up a significant injury to his knee.

“The nature of the injury meant it had to be operated on. He has had that surgery and all went as well as it could do.

“He will be out for a significant period of time.

“We can’t put a timescale on a recovery time at this early stage, but he will certainly be out for the remainder of the campaign and into next season.”

Gilbey joined the Dons from Wigan on transfer deadline day last summer and made 25 appearances for the club before being sidelined.

Despite being one of the newer members of the squad, he was appointed captain by ex-boss Robbie Neilson, and Micciche acknowledges he is a big loss as his side battle relegation.

“It’s not good. We’re devastated for Alex,” said Micciche.

“In the time I’ve been here, he has been a fantastic leader both on and off the pitch.

“We got some bad news that he will be out for a long period – the rest of the season. Our thoughts are with him.

“He’s getting great medical treatment here.”
