Time’s up for Rosler after rout at Rovers

- By Stephen Thirkill

UWE Rosler’s miserable run of results at Fleetwood Town finally came to an end as the latest defeat saw the club’s board dispense with his services.

Goals from Alex Kiwomya and a Tom Anderson brace sealed a comprehensive victory over the relegationthreatened Cod Army.

The loss at Doncaster was Fleetwood’s seventh in a row and proved too much for the club’s hierarchy to handle – releasing a statement at 7.30pm to announce his departure.

“Fleetwood Town can confirm Uwe Rosler has been relieved of his duties as head coach,” it read.

“The decision was made this evening following a run of results which has seen Town fall to seven straight defeats.

“Everyone at Fleetwood Town would like to place on record their thanks to Uwe for his hard work and professionalism during his time at the club.”

Fleetwood’s search for a new boss begins with immediate effect, with Barry Nicholson and David Lucas taking temporary charge.

Earlier in the evening Rosler had once again lamented his side’s performance.

“We did all the basics wrong and when the first goal went in the confidence went out of us, which is understandable considering the position we are in,” he said in his final interview in charge.

“We made a mistake for the second goal. We tried to get back into it at 2-0 down but the way we conceded the third goal was unacceptable.

“It shows where we are at as a team and it was too much to come back from.”

Kiwomya gave Rovers a dream start when he stabbed home John Marquis’ cross from close range on 14 minutes.

Rovers doubled their lead six minutes later when Anderson fired home after Marquis’ low free-kick under the wall had initially been saved on 27 minutes.

And it was nearly game over just after the restart when Alfie Beestin cracked an effort against the post after more good setup play by James Coppinger.

But Anderson made it safe when he got his brace in the 55th minute after superbly heading home Tommy Rowe’s inviting cross.

Beaming Doncaster boss Darren Ferguson hailed his side’s win against the Cod Army as a ‘complete performance’.

He said: “We were dominant and battled well so I’m very pleased. We got a clean sheet and three goals and I’m delighted by that.

“The players were reminded of what was expected of them, and we played how people will have been used to seeing them out there.”
