DUNK: JOE HAS DUNNE IT JUST RIGHT...

- By James Ayles

HARRISON Dunk insists the simple approach of Cambridge caretaker manager Joe Dunne will pay dividends in the next couple of weeks after a tumultuous few days.

Former boss Shaun Derry left the club by mutual consent last week, and his ex-assistant manager Dunne subsequently led his side to a 3-2 win away to Chesterfield in his first match in charge on Tuesday.

Cambridge were 14th ahead of this weekend’s clash at home to Grimsby, and winger-turned-leftback Dunk feels Dunne is perfectly placed to lead the club back up the table.

“Obviously no-one wants to see anyone lose his job and everybody had a lot of respect and liked the gaffer but that’s football,” he said.

“The new gaffer, Joe, everyone loves and I’ve been working with him for a while now.

“Joe’s just kept it simple. He’s been class with the lads, just got our minds on the game and it’s showed.”

Dunne could be a contender for the post on a permanent basis, while former Southend boss Phil Brown and ex-Brentford boss Andy Scott have also been linked with the job.

After a spell out of the side, Dunk has started the last three straight games at left-back.

He is aiming for an extended run ahead of the final weeks of the campaign – with a play-off charge still possible.

The 27-year-old said: “This season has been a bit in and out, which is difficult. I don’t mind playing a different position as long as I’m on the pitch and it’s suited me playing as an attacking full-back.”

“Me and Brad (Halliday) are quite similar in how we play.

“We’re both quite attacking and it gives us another dimension.

“We can crowd the midfield, dominate that area of the pitch, and me and Brad provide the width, so it works quite well.”
