MAXIME’S ‘BOMB’ EARNS ACCOLADE

- By Tom Blackett

MAXIME Biamou’s maiden EFL goal was extra special. It has earned him the Sky Bet League Two Goal of the Month award for January.

The 27-year-old lashed home a 20-yard shot on the bounce, from his own headed flick-on, in the 3-1 home win against Swindon.

He picked up 43 per cent of the public vote to beat Forest Green’s Dayle Grubb and Accrington Stanley’s Sean McConville to the prize.

Frenchman Biamou, who joined the Sky Blues from National League side Sutton United last summer, said: “It’s probably the best goal I’ve scored and I’d like to thank everyone who voted for me.

“When I saw the ball drop it was like a bomb, so I wanted to say to my teammates in front of the ball “leave it, I’m going to shoot”.

“Jordan (Shipley – team-mate) saw my face and it was like I wanted to put all of my pain in this shot, so I’m very happy to score a fantastic goal.” In the Championship,

Norwich midfielder James Maddison claimed the prize for the second time this season.

Stunning

After taking the honours for his winner at Middlesbrough in September, the highly-rated 21-year-old repeated the feat with his stunning long-range strike at Brentford in late January.

“To be fair, I think the Brentford goal was better because of the nutmeg before it and the finish,” he said. “It was just something I’ve done in training a lot, so to put it into a game and show everyone what I can do is brilliant.”

Maddison earned 51 per cent of the public vote to see off competition from Ipswich’s Bersant Celina and Millwall’s Steve Morison.

Bristol Rovers striker Ellis Harrison scooped the League One accolade for his superb solo goal late on at Doncaster. He raced 60 yards with the ball, leaving defenders trailing in his wake, and then drove his shot into the far corner to seal a 3-1 win.

“We were defending deep, so I picked it up and looked for Gaffs (Rory Gaffney) a couple of times, but it just opened up and I got a shooting opportunity,” said the 24year-old. “I missed the week before against Bradford, so I had to redeem myself.

“I’m enjoying my football, playing every week so if I can chip in with the goals, that’s great.”
