Buoyant Boro turn slump on its head

- By Chris Spittles

STEVENAGE snapped out of their dip in form as they hammered Yeovil to pick up a first win in five games – with boss Darren Sarll claiming his side could have had more.

Boro ended Yeovil’s four-game unbeaten run as goals from Luke Amos, Jonathan Smith, Danny Newton and Ben Kennedy clinched a comfortable victory.

The visitors pulled a goal back through substitute Ryan Seager but, in truth, Stevenage could have won by more.

“I thought it was a great performance from the lads, they showed lots of enthusiasm and lots of energy and deserved the victory,” said boss Sarll.

“I don’t want to be disrespectful to the opposition but, if anything, we could have won by more.

“I’m beginning to wonder when we’ll ever get a penalty as both Jack King and Luke Amos were fouled inside the box and both should have been penalties - it could have been 6-1.

“But we played some good football and scored some great goals and I’m pleased to get the win.”

Yeovil saw their unbeaten run come to an abrupt end and boss Darren Way said: “It was very disappointing. Football has a funny way of catching you out and today we had no leadership and no intensity. We went 2-0 down in the first half and just allowed them too much space to score those goals, there was no blocking or tackling and we gifted them those goals.

“There was no urgency or commitment from my players to win the ball back and it’s didn’t look like my team out there.

“This is a reality check .”

Stevenage made a bright start, with Newton shooting just wide before Amos fired the home side in front – curling in a brilliant 25yard dipping shot on 16 minutes.

Kennedy was then denied by a last-ditch challenge before Jonny Maddison saved well to deny Mark McKee from close range as the hosts pressed for a second.

Kennedy also volleyed over when he was put clear but Stevenage did finally double their lead in first-half stoppage time – Smith finding the bottom corner with a powerful low drive from over 20 yards.

And just a minute into the second half it was 3-0 as Newton was on hand to convert a Kennedy cross from close range.

On 58 minutes the game was over as Ben Wilmot set up Kennedy to make it 4-0 before Seager pounced on an error for the Glovers.
