BELLAMY IN LINE AT U’S AS SOL HAS A BLAST

- By Luke Baker

“ONE of the greatest minds in football” is how Sol Campbell described himself after missing out on the Oxford job this week, with the U’s looking set to appoint Craig Bellamy.

Oxford’s owner Sumrith “Tiger” Than aka rn j an asuth,w ho completed his takeover of the club on Thursday, admits his first priority is to end the ongoing search for a coach.

And the Thai businessman appears to have settled on Bellamy, 38, the former Welsh international striker, who notched 81 Premier League goals during his playing career.

He is currently player development manager at Cardiff, and Bluebirds boss Neil Warnock is convinced he would be perfect fit.

“I think it would be a good appointment,” said Warnock. “These top players need to go out and learn the business.

“It’s not just about coaching, it’s about managing up and down with the boardroom and everything.

“Craig has got great attributes. He might have been disappointed not to get the Welsh job [which went to Ryan Giggs] and I hope he does get it [the Oxford job].”

Campbell, the 43-year-old former England defender, was turned down before launching into a remarkable rant during an appearance on the Arsenal podcast, Highbury & Heels.

“I did go for it [the Oxford job] and they didn’t accept me,” he explained. “Maybe it was a lack of experience. Experience? How do I get experience? Well I need a job.

“It’s not like it’s rocket science to run a football club, especially when you get to that level. I’m one of the greatest minds in football and I’m being wasted because of a lack of experience or ‘maybe he talks his mind too much’.

“I’m sorry I’ve got a mind, but don’t be scared of that. That should be something you want at your club.”
