CALL FOR CALM AS GRIMSBY FANSGET IN FROTH

- By Will Thompson

GRIMSBY director John Fenty is pleading with fans not to let tempers boil over as the hunt for a manager continues.

The club parted ways with Russell Slade this month following a 3-0 loss to Crawley that extended a winless run to 12 games.

Fenty said: “I want to plead to sections of the fans that have really got an angst with the way the football club’s run to take that argument outside Blundell Park because it isn’t helping anything.

“Some of the expressions, even before kick-off, to players were very hostile and very difficult for the players.

“It’s not the players’ fault, the argument that sections of the fans might have with the hierarchy of the football club. And, for that reason, I would ask if the fans could keep those arguments outside Blundell Park.

“It’s a very important part of the season and we really need to come together.”

Phil Brown has reportedly turned down the Grimsby job after previously suggesting he would be interested, telling BBC Radio Humberside: “The league is irrelevant to me. I’d be interested in speaking with people at the club.”

Macclesfield boss John Askey remains the frontrunner, despite the club issuing a statement claiming they are doing everything to keep him.

Current caretaker manager Paul Wilkinson has also been suggested as a potential successor to Slade, though a 3-1 defeat to Cambridge in his first game in charge won’t have helped his case.

A Grimsby statement said: “The club continues to work diligently through a shortlist of applications, with interviews continuing. This appointment is one of the most important in the club’s history and we will continue our thorough process to ensure we appoint the right candidate.”
