DUNNE’S RELAXED AS U’S PONDER VACANCY

- By Will Thompson

CAMBRIDGE caretaker manager Joe Dunne says discussions surrounding his long-term future don’t bother him and he is taking things game by game.

Shaun Derry left the club by mutual consent on February 9 following a goalless draw with Lincoln.

Backroom staff Dunne and Mark Bonner took temporary control of playing matters on an interim basis.

Dunne said: “Whatever happens, happens – they are other people’s decisions.

“That’s the game and I accept that. I have no problem with that. It frees me of any kind of paranoia. It doesn’t really bother me.

“Other people control that. I can only control what I do, and that’s keeping everything right in training, making sure the environment is good and keeping the focus on the next game.

“Let’s be honest. There are still going to be a lot of people interested in the job, and so they should be.

“It’s a club with the vision to go forward, with what they want to do with the development situation.

“So, it’s a healthy club and a quality club to be able to work for.”

Dunne, who joined Cambridge as assistant manager to Richard Money in 2015, added: “We will, as a staff, maintain what we’ve done, and that’s prepare for every moment of the day we’re in because we can’t control the future.

“We can try to affect it, but Saturday is Saturday and that’s it.

“We all know that being a manager – interim, caretaker or acting – comes with its own pressures. We’ve just tried to keep that pressure off the players.

“I just consider myself lucky to be coming in every morning. With the staff we’ve got and working with the players we’ve got, it’s a good environment at the moment.

“Whatever goes on off the field is none of my business.”
