COTTAGE CROWD BEHIND MITRO’S SURGE
HE has stuttered in the Premier League this season with Newcastle United, but striker Aleksandar Mitrovic is convinced the love and support he has received from Fulham’s faithful since arriving in January has helped him rediscover his best form in West London.
The 23-year-old Serbian international arrived at Newcastle in 2015 and, despite being a fans’ favourite, struggled for consistent form, fitness and goals in the North East.
His move during the January transfer window to Fulham has coincided with him bagging five goals in his last four games – and Mitrovic believes the welcome from the Cottage crowd has contributed to his goal surge.
Mitrovic was unplayable at times against Sheffield United in midweek, with a fantastic workrate complementing his first-half double.
Now, the Fulham forward has his eyes on the big prize, helping his loan club continue their impressive run of results and striving for promotion.
“I’ve really enjoyed myself since the first moment,” he said. “They accepted me really fast, which made me feel amazing.
“I’m feeling better and better every game. I’m here to help the team get promoted. My job is to score goals. The team creates a lot of chances for me, which helps me score and makes me happy.
“I will do everything I can to help my team get promoted. We are thinking automatic. We know we have quality. We know we have a good team.
“We are really close, so we will try to push until the last game and do everything we can to get promoted directly. We’ll see what happens, but I think we can do it.
“We’ve said already we have to go game by game. We know what we want from this season. We must stay sharp and smart.”
