MORRIS AND CO OUT TO LIFT THE TROPHY

- By Tom Harle

CARLTON Morris has vowed to end Shrewsbury’s Wembley hoodoo after guiding his team to the Checkatrade Trophy final.

The Norwich loanee headed the semi-final’s only goal against Yeovil in midweek, meaning one match stands between them and silverware.

The Shrews face Lincoln next month at the national stadium – a ground where they’ve not prevailed in three previous visits.

“All season we’ve been taking it game by game”, said Morris. “That’s where our success has come from, so we’ll carry on doing that. We’ve got league games to look forward to and we need to finish the season strongly.

“Hopefully, we’ve got a good chance to put that Wembley record right.

“I think we’ve got a good opportunity with the team we’ve got and, hopefully, Wembley’s a nice surface we can play football on.”

In comparison, Danny Cowley’s Imps have never appeared at Wembley in their history, but cup runs have become their forte after reaching the FA Cup quarter-finals as a NonLeague team last season.

But Morris, whose side beat Port Vale, Blackpool and Oldham en route to the semi-finals, is focusing solely on his own team.

In fact, a lot of his attention is on 30-year-old midfielder Shaun Whalley, whose 15th assist of the season set up the 22-yearold striker against Yeovil in the last four.

He added: “It was a great delivery from Shaun.

“You always know you are going to get a good delivery from Shaun, so I just made a run. Thankfully, the rest is history.

“It’s not surprising he’s got so many assists. He’s on all our set-pieces and his delivery is first class.

“He’s always getting at his full-back, putting crosses in, making chances, so it doesn’t surprise me. He should have more if anything.”
