Doncaster striker Andy Williams talks us through his football memories

First game? It was Liverpool v Nottingham Forest. My dad is a big Liverpool fan, which is why I support them as well, and I went to watch a 0-0 draw back in (February) 1993. It was a little disappointing because I like to see goals and I didn’t see one that day, but I do remember, a couple of seasons later, that Liverpool won on the final day against Blackburn, who still won the league anyway. I was there that day as well. It was a surreal atmosphere because no-one really cheered Jamie Redknapp’s winning goal. There were random cheers throughout the game when people found out that Manchester United weren’t winning at the other game, so it was a weird match, that one. First hero? Initially, I used to quite like Steve McManaman and Robbie Fowler, but as I grew older, the first hero I really had as a Liverpool fan was Michael Owen. I was quite small growing up, so he was a bit of a role model for me, in terms of thinking that being small didn’t matter and that I could still make it, regardless of my size. Obviously, him being a striker and scoring goals was a big inspiration to me, as well. First boots? The first real pair I remember was a pair of Puma Kings with a big white tongue, that I’d probably never wear now. I remember my dad taking me to a sports shop and getting me the cheapest pair he could find! It was one of those where your parents would say: ‘wear a couple pairs of socks and you’ll grow into them’. First shirt? I think I had the Liverpool home shirt from the season I went to see my first game but the one that sticks out is a yellow Liverpool away kit and I had ‘McManaman 17’ on the back of it. I collected quite a few kits through my youth. Up to my early teens, I certainly had most of the Liverpool strips that were around at the time. First match? My first appearance was in a Senior Cup game for Hereford, at home to Forest Green in 2005. Then, in the same season, I had my first appearance in the Conference, away to Accrington. My first start for Hereford then came against Woking (in November), when I scored my first goal. I was 19 at the time and I hadn’t been given too much of a chance to play until that age. First goal? I can’t quite remember how the ball came to me, but I remember being on the left-side channel, going towards the away end at Edgar Street. I just sort of feinted to cross, cut inside and hit the ball low and hard past Shwan Jalal, who was in goal for Woking at the time. I’ve come across him a few times since then. I never forget that he was the guy I scored my first goal against. I just ran around like a headless chicken, not really knowing what to do in terms of celebrating! First red card? I’ve never been sent off, thankfully. I’m still waiting for that one and, hopefully, it will never come. I’d like to think it’s something I can be proud of. I’m sure there’ll be some saying that, if I had a bit more edge about me, I’d have more of a chance of getting sent off, but I think my general discipline has been pretty good.
