Return of the Dons is reward for all

-

FRIDAY was a momentous day for everyone who has been involved with AFC Wimbledon over the past 16 years. Ever since the fan-owned club formed in the aftermath of the original Wimbledon’s controversial switch to Milton Keynes have been in existence, they have dreamt of returning to the borough of Merton.

And for all the success they’ve had on the field over the last 16 years – including an astonishing six promotions – that hankering to return home has never left them.

That the opportunity should eventually arise back at their spiritual home in Plough Lane is even more exciting for all concerned.

And despite knowing that the old Wimbledon greyhound stadium was to become their new home, the fact that the diggers went in on Friday morning was an indication that the move really is happening.

Of course, there is much to do. There is a massive demolition job to undertake, the land needs to be levelled and there is a new stadium to construct. There is an aim to be playing at Plough Lane again in the 2019-20 season, so there is not much leeway.

But the fact that the work has started is a deserved reward for all those people who have invested their time and energy in the club since its launch in 2002.

As Dons legends Dave Bassett and Ian Cooke said on Friday, there should be real optimism that the people of Wimbledon will rally behind the club and they can continue to march forwards.

Of course, there will be some people who will not want a football club on the doorstep, but let’s hope the vast majority enjoy having AFC Wimbledon at the heart of their community. As you may be aware, The FLP is based in Wimbledon, so we’re looking forward to having them on our doorstep. Welcome home…
